Antarctica Expeditions

Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest place on the planet and 98% of it is covered by ice that is at least a mile thick.

Explore Antarctica on a modern, spacious and well-designed expedition ship for the journey of a lifetime. Antarctic expeditions travel between October and March, avoiding the darkness of the Antarctic winter. Most itineraries include the Antarctic Peninsula and some of the South Shetland islands. Some expeditions also include the Falkland Islands and/or South Georgia. A few expeditions travel into the Weddell Sea and some venture to push further south and cross the polar circle. Early booking is advisable – usually a year in advance.

Antarctic Peninsula

The north-western tip of the Antarctic Peninsula is ice-free for most of the October-March season attracting vast colonies of penguins and seals and forming the feeding waters for whales. The Gerlache Strait is the centre-piece for most journeys into the western Antarctic Peninsula with stunningly beautiful scenery and an abundant richness of wildlife.

Most journeys to the Antarctic Peninsula start and end in Ushuaia. If time is of the essence and/or you don’t have good sea legs there are shorter air-cruise journeys from Southern Chile.

South Georgia

South Georgia is 860 miles east-southeast of the Falkland Islands and provides the greatest breeding and feeding grounds for warm-blooded marine life. The island supports some 5 million fur seals, 100 million sea birds, around half the planet’s elephant seals and millions of penguins. Famously, after leaving his men at Elephant Island, Sir Ernest Shackleton reached South Georgia in dramatic journey in an open lifeboat and returned to rescue them.

Our Antarctica Revealed pages has information about all expedition cruises to South Georgia.

Falkland Islands

Each year a number of expedition cruises include the Falklands on a journey to South Georgia and/or on to Antarctica. West Point Island has notable colonies of rockhopper penguins and black-browed albatrosses,  Carcass Island has gentoo and magellan penguins. Some itineraries include flights between Chile and Stanley.

Please contact us to discuss longer tailor-made itineraries to the Falkland Islands.
